  • 9 Souls | Waterville, WA | 2016

I never knew these people, but aspects of their lives surround me whenever I visit. Some were probably parents. In autumn, the shouts and squeals of kids float to this very spot from the school a block away. Maybe some were farmers. In late summer, harvesters ply the wheat fields at this cemetery’s southern boundary. Some most certainly loved (more…)

  • Winter Tree | Pateros, WA | 2016

“Listen to the trees as they sway in the wind. Their leaves are telling secrets. Their bark sings songs of olden days as it grows around their trunks. And their roots (more…)

  • Pebble Roof | Tacoma, WA | 2016

The Tacoma Art Museum overflows with imaginative and inspiring works. Its exhibits are always surprising, challenging and (best of all) accessible. Visitors can stand just feet away from artworks — sometimes even stand alone — for an intimate viewing experience not always available at larger museums. One added plus: (more…)

  • Cathedral | New Orleans, LA | 2016

(Maybe this isn’t the most artful photograph, but here’s what happened … ) We tourists jostled onto the prime spot to get the best photo of the St. Louis Cathedral in the New Orleans French Quarter. A gay Japanese couple elbowed their way to the front, right under a statue of Andrew Jackson, and proceeded to kiss passionately, (more…)

  • Art Lover | New Orleans, LA | 2016

Why does a certain artwork capture our interest and touch our soul? Subject matter, composition, color palette, brush technique — they all play a role. But famous works, those known and praised by millions, also radiate mystery. Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, for instance. Or, more recently, David Hockney’s Pool with Two Figures. The viewer feels these works have been lifted from (more…)

  • Tree | New Orleans, LA | 2016

“Nothing is holier, nothing is more exemplary than a beautiful, strong tree. Trees are sanctuaries. Whoever knows how to speak to them, whoever knows how to listen to them, can learn the truth. They preach the ancient law of life. A tree says: (more…)

  • Aerial View | Above Brighton, Colorado | 2016

Mankind’s tracks become most obvious in winter. Roads, trails, sidewalks, patios — wherever snow has been cleared — look etched onto a pristine landscape. From thousands of feet up, you can easily identify (more…)

  • In Fog | New Orleans, LA | 2016

It was a slack day on the immense field where the Battle of New Orleans was fought in 1815. We were two of four visitors that morning at the national historic site. So I was curious about this guy walking slowly up the drive followed by a car creeping silently behind him. He stepped haltingly, zombie-like, using up a full 20 minutes to walk the distance. I’d study a few interpretive signs, inspect a cannon or two, then look up to check on his progress. Still coming (more…)

  • Pins | New Orleans, LA | 2016

The velvet-covered board measured 4×8 feet and displayed hundreds of colored and jeweled pins. Clowns, peacocks, knights, howling coyotes, real estate “sold” signs, and boastful “nurses care” and “doctors know” slogans. It was certainly the most extensive assortment of any item at the famed New Orleans’ French Market. “You like?” asked the little man behind the counter. “”If not, (more…)

  • Flight Crystals | Somewhere over Texas | 2016

Water droplets and ice crystals appear on an airplane window at 30,000 feet. “At the altitudes jet aircraft fly, the air temperature may be –40 F or even lower. Water vapor crystallizes at these temperatures if condensation nuclei (dust and other aerosols) are present. However, it’s likely that (more…)
